Barrick Gold Mine Encourages Local Business Expansion

The Mara Region business community has received a call to seize the opportunities presented by Barrick Gold Mine's mining operations to foster business growth. Apolinary Lyambiko, the General Manager of Barrick North Mara Gold Mine, made this call on Tuesday during the conclusion of a training program designed to equip 19 company owners with the knowledge and skills needed to leverage business opportunities provided by the mining company.

Mr. Lyambiko emphasized the significance of the training in promoting indigenous businesses in Mara, highlighting the commitment of Barrick to ensure that local entrepreneurs benefit from the opportunities within its mining operations. The participating business owners are from areas surrounding the North Mara Gold Mine in Nyamongo, Tarime District, Mara.

The training is part of Barrick's Local Business Development Programme, reflecting the company's strategy to support local businesses and contribute to community development. Mr. Lyambiko noted that Barrick has allowed local suppliers to serve and distribute products in the mine, with a substantial payment of USD 37.4 million (95 billion TZS) made to local suppliers last year, adhering to the 'Local Content' philosophy.

Barrick North Mara Mine currently collaborates with 118 companies employing 1,144 people, predominantly from the local areas surrounding the mining operations. This collaboration has not only contributed to community development but has also strengthened relationships between the mining company and the local community.

Juma Chikoka, the Rorya District Commissioner, commended Barrick for initiating the capacity-building program for local businesspeople. He emphasized the importance of the training in enhancing participants' understanding and empowering them to seize various commercial opportunities within and outside the Barrick North Mara mine.

"As the government, we recognize the contribution of Barrick North Mara, and this also helps us to achieve national development," said Commissioner Chikoka.

Representing the Tanzania Mining Commission, Ms. Annasia Kwayu commended Barrick for the training initiative and stressed the importance of providing quality services to mines.

She noted that the program serves as a tangible example of the implementation of the 2010 Mining Law and the principles of Tanzanian participation in 2018 and its subsequent amendments. The initiative aligns with the commitment to actively involve Tanzanians in the mining sector and promote sustainable development.
