Barrick Gold Tanzania Honored with Five OSH Awards

Barrick Gold Tanzania has once again reaffirmed its unwavering dedication to the safety and well-being of its workforce in the mining sector, clinching five prestigious awards at the 2024 Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) exhibitions.

The recognition comes as a testament to Barrick Gold's steadfast commitment to upholding the highest standards of safety across its mining operations, underscoring its proactive approach towards safeguarding the welfare of its employees.

Statistics reveal that workplace accidents exact a considerable toll on national economies, consuming between three and four percent of total annual incomes. The International Labour Organization (ILO) estimates the global cost of workplace accidents and illnesses to be nearly 3 trillion dollars annually, highlighting the urgent need for concerted efforts to enhance occupational safety standards.

Hassan Kallegeya, Barrick Safety Coordinator, expressed pride in the company's achievements, particularly emphasizing the significance of safety as a core principle guiding Barrick's mining operations. He remarked, "The OSH awards demonstrate Barrick Gold's dedication to observing the safety and health of its workforce in its mining operations."

Barrick's Bulyanhulu Gold Mine emerged as the top overall winner, clinching the most coveted prize at the event. Additionally, Bulyanhulu received accolades for best office administration, office support, and other business support activities, as well as the Best OHS Innovator in the mining sector.

Notably, Barrick North Mara was recognized for its exemplary commitment to caring for workers with special needs, securing the top accolade in this category.

The awards ceremony, graced by the presence of Minister of State for the Prime Minister's Office (Labour, Employment, Youth, and Persons with Disabilities) Deogratius Ndejembi, highlighted Barrick's exemplary performance in promoting occupational safety and health practices.

Barrick's continued success in the realm of OSH is underscored by its comprehensive safety programs for employees and contractors, aimed at ensuring that everyone returns home safely and in good health. The company's proactive measures align with global efforts to mitigate work-related risks and foster a culture of safety and well-being in the workplace.

As per data from the International Labour Organization (ILO), an alarming 2.6 million people succumb to work-related causes annually, with approximately 330,000 cases attributed to fatal accidents. In light of these sobering statistics, Barrick remains steadfast in its commitment to creating a Zero Harm Workplace, with every member of the organization dedicated to the pursuit of excellence in occupational safety and health.
