Cotton Farming Project launched in Rufiji District


In a significant development, Mr. Abubakar Kunenge, the COAST Regional Commissioner, has officially inaugurated a cotton farming project in Rufiji District. The project, set to be executed by Rufiji Cotton Company Limited from India, marks a notable investment in the region's agricultural sector.

Addressing a public gathering at Chumbi village in Rufiji District recently, RC Kunenge expressed his congratulations to the investors for choosing to invest in cotton farming in the district. He expressed confidence in the project, citing the extensive experience of Rufiji Cotton Company Limited in the field.

Highlighting the historical significance of cotton cultivation in Rufiji District, RC Kunenge mentioned that the district played a pioneering role, with the first cultivation of cotton in the country dating back to 1964. He further affirmed the government's support for the initiative, stating, "The government is appreciating what you are doing and is ready to provide any support you need."

The cotton farming project is anticipated to generate a substantial number of employment opportunities for both youth and residents, directly and indirectly. Additionally, the government stands to benefit through increased income from tax collections.

Hassan Kinje, the Director General for Rufiji Cotton Company Limited, shared insights into the company's commitment to the project. He disclosed that the company has already employed 24 extension officers who will play a crucial role in educating cotton farmers in the region. Kinje also revealed the company's ambitious plans to construct a cotton factory and a textile factory, providing further avenues for direct and indirect employment for the local populace.

Ambassador Aggrey Mwanri, recognized as the ambassador of cotton crop in the country, extended congratulations to President Samia Suluhu Hassan for her commendable efforts in attracting investors to various sectors, including cotton farming. The launch of the cotton farming project in Rufiji District reflects the government's dedication to fostering economic growth, creating employment opportunities, and advancing agricultural knowledge in the region.
