Dar Port Ranks 312th in World Bank's Efficiency Ranking Outshines Regional Counterparts

The Dar es Salaam Port in Tanzania has made significant strides in global rankings, climbing 49 places in the World Bank's latest assessment of the most efficient ports worldwide. According to the Container Port Performance Index 2022, Tanzania's primary sea gateway now stands at the 312th position, a considerable improvement from its previous rank of 361. This achievement places the Dar es Salaam Port ahead of its regional counterpart, the Mombasa Port, which currently holds the 326th position out of the 348 ports assessed globally. The rise in rankings can be attributed to the Tanzanian government's efforts in enhancing the port's infrastructure and expansion through the implementation of the Dar es Salaam Maritime Gateway Programme (DMGP), leading to a significant increase in efficiency. Over the past years, the country's port industry has experienced steady growth in terms of infrastructure development and the acquisition of modern equipment and technologies. This progress is a result of substantial investments made by the sixth-phase government to improve the sector, recognizing its crucial role as the backbone of Tanzania's economy. In the past two years, the TPA, with the government's support, has made remarkable progress in transforming port operations and increasing efficiency. Notable improvements include port infrastructure, the adoption of modern cargo handling equipment and technologies, and enhanced safety and security measures. Additionally, substantial efforts have been made to promote Tanzania's ports and attract a greater volume of cargo passing through them. Presenting the budget for the Ministry of Works and Transport, Professor Makame Mbarawa, the minister responsible, reported that as of April in the current financial year, the TPA had successfully handled 20.8 million tonnes of cargo and 765,504 containers. These figures reflect the positive impact of the ongoing developments and improvements within the port. The Container Port Performance Index 2022 also assessed other ports in sub-Saharan Africa, including the Port of Berbera (ranked 144), Djibouti (ranked 26), Port Elizabeth (ranked 291), Durban (ranked 341), and Cape Town (ranked 344). The World Bank emphasizes that an efficient port operation is crucial for trade development in the region, noting significant improvements since 2020, when the marine industry faced reduced activities due to the Covid-19 pandemic. With the continued dedication of the Tanzanian government, President Samia's vision to establish Tanzania as a hub for water transportation is becoming a reality. The remarkable progress made in the Dar es Salaam Port's efficiency ranking signifies a promising future for Tanzania's port sector and its contribution to the country's overall economic growth and development.
