Fuel Prices Drop in Tanzania, Easing Burden for Motorists

Tanzanian motorists are set to experience relief at the fuel pumps this month as both wholesale and retail prices of petrol and diesel are poised for a notable reduction.

In an official announcement released on Wednesday by the Energy and Water Utilities Regulatory Authority (EWURA), it was revealed that the retail prices of petrol and diesel, imported via the Dar es Salaam port, will witness a substantial drop of 74/- and 148/- per litre, respectively.

However, amid these reductions, EWURA noted that the retail price of kerosene imported through the same port is anticipated to rise by TZS 57 per litre compared to the prices recorded on December 6, 2023. The authority attributed the decline in petroleum product prices in January 2024 primarily to the global drop in world oil prices (FOB), marking an average decrease of 6.03% for Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) and 7.13% for Automotive Gas Oil (AGO).

This reduction was further influenced by a decline in premiums associated with importing petroleum products for the Dar es Salaam port. The average reduction stands at 3.72% for PMS and 17.52% for AGO. Additionally, for the Mtwara port, the decrease in premiums averages at 22.71% for PMS and 22.12% for AGO.

Starting this month, petrol in Dar es Salaam will be priced at TZS 3,084 per litre, while diesel will be available for TZS 3,078 per litre. However, kerosene consumers will face a slight increase, with a new price of TZS 3,510 per litre.EWURA emphasized the importance for retailers and wholesalers to strictly adhere to the displayed prices. The authority warned that legal actions will be taken against those failing to comply with the provided instructions.

This reduction in fuel prices comes as a welcome relief for Tanzanian drivers, potentially alleviating financial burdens amid economic challenges.

For further updates and adherence to the set fuel prices, EWURA urges consumers to stay informed through official channels and to report any discrepancies observed at fuel stations.
