Dar es Salaam - Geita Gold Mining Limited (GGML) has taken a significant step in expanding its footprint by establishing a new mineral exploration company, Geita Greenfields Mineral Exploration Limited. This move comes as GGML, a key player in the mining sector, deepens its presence in the central regions of Tanzania.
Announcing this development during the Employer of the Year 2023 Award ceremony in Dar es Salaam on Monday, Mr. Simon Shayo, the Vice President for Sustainability and Corporate Affairs (Africa) at AngloGold Ashanti, highlighted the company's commitment to fostering local employment. The newly formed subsidiary is set to employ 100 percent Tanzanians, contributing to the nation's workforce.
Geita Greenfields Mineral Exploration Limited will focus on mineral prospecting and exploration, with plans to identify a mining site of comparable scale to GGML. The exploration activities are slated to commence in the central regions of Dodoma, Singida, Tabora, and Shinyanga, and the company's proposed headquarters will be located in Dodoma.
Having operated in the Geita Region for over two decades, GGML currently employs nearly 6,500 individuals, with a majority being Tanzanian nationals. Mr. Shayo emphasized that 80 percent of GGML's management comprises Tanzanians, reflecting the company's commitment to local talent development.
Expressing gratitude for the positive investment climate fostered by President Samia Suluhu Hassan, Mr. Shayo outlined the company's substantial contributions to the Tanzanian economy. GGML's annual expenditure exceeds $400 million, with over 75 percent of those funds being spent within the country.
Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office (Labour, Youth, Employment, and Persons with Disability), Prof Joyce Ndalichako, who attended the event on behalf of the Prime Minister, acknowledged the private sector's vital role and encouraged businesses to strive for excellence. She commended award recipients for their contributions and urged them to maintain their dedication to excellence.
