In response to the devastating floods in Kilombero District, Kilombero Sugar Company Limited has stepped forward with vital humanitarian aid, offering support to over 500 households impacted by the recent flooding events caused by heavy rainfall across the country.
The company's Communications and Stakeholder Relations Manager, Victor Byemelwa, announced the donation on Thursday, highlighting the contribution of six tonnes of essential food items, including beans, corn flour, and rice, valued at 15 million Tanzanian shillings. Byemelwa emphasized that this assistance forms part of the company's Disaster Relief Program, demonstrating Kilombero Sugar's commitment to community welfare and values of responsiveness and integrity.
"Kilombero Sugar is committed to the welfare of our community. Today's donation reflects our values of responsiveness and integrity. By supporting more than 500 families, we are addressing the immediate needs of those experiencing hardship," Byemelwa stated during the handover ceremony.
He urged other stakeholders to collaborate with government initiatives to assist communities affected by the floods exacerbated by the El Niño phenomenon. Byemelwa stressed the importance of collective action against climate change, underlining Kilombero Sugar Company's dedication to environmental conservation.
Dunstan Kyobya, the Kilombero District Commissioner, expressed deep appreciation for the timely support provided by Kilombero Sugar Company. "Our community has been hard-hit by the ongoing rains, and Kilombero Sugar Company's proactive contribution is deeply appreciated," Kyobya remarked, acknowledging the synergy between the government and private sector in addressing critical issues.
Kyobya revealed that approximately 1,500 households have been affected, with areas such as Utengule and Masagati in Mlimba District Council suffering the most. He emphasized the urgent need for aid as efforts are underway to restore infrastructure and assist affected families.
