Mikumi National Park Enhances Road to 'Barack Obama' Picnic Site with World Bank Support

Mikumi National Park management is upgrading the road leading to a prominent tourist spot, the 'Barack Obama' picnic site, designed to cater to top dignitaries. Located in the remote Millennium area, this site was initially prepared for former US President Barack Obama during his anticipated visit to Tanzania in 2014.

Recent heavy rains have severely damaged the road to the Obama Picnic Site. In response, the park management is undertaking a comprehensive upgrade of the road and other infrastructure, supported by the World Bank-funded Resilient Natural Resource Management for Tourism and Growth (REGROW) project.

David Kadomo, Senior Conservation Officer of Tanzania National Parks (TANAPA) and head of Mikumi Park, mentioned that the project also includes the upgrading and expansion of the Kikoboga aerodrome within the park.

The Obama Picnic Site is named after Barack Obama, who planned to visit Mikumi National Park in 2014. Although a last-minute change in his schedule postponed his visit, Obama has expressed his intention to visit the park in the future. Despite his absence, the site remains a popular attraction for tourists and wildlife, especially lions.

The Millennium area, home to the Obama Picnic Site, features a man-made lake created during the transition to the second millennium in 2000. This lake, inhabited by hippos and crocodiles, is one of the area's main attractions. The other notable feature is a giant ancient baobab tree with a hollow trunk, historically used by poachers for hiding. Local communities believe the baobab, estimated to be around 1,000 years old, holds magical powers and was once used as a shrine.

The Obama Picnic Site, with its historical and natural attractions, continues to draw tourists despite the former president not yet visiting the park. Obama returned to Tanzania in 2017 after his presidency, landing at Kilimanjaro International Airport and visiting the Arusha region and Maswa Game Reserve.
