New Passenger Ferry Service Links Comoros Islands with Mtwara

Mtwara District Commissioner, Hon. Mwanahamisi Munkunda, presided over the launch of the MV ACADIE passenger ferry, marking the commencement of its service between the Comoros Islands and Mtwara.

The official launch ceremony took place on April 19, 2024, at the Port of Mtwara. MV ACADIE, with a capacity to accommodate 300 passengers and carry 150 tons of cargo, arrived at the port with 20 passengers on board. Among them were individuals traveling for medical treatment at the Southern Zone Referral Hospital and Muhimbili National Hospital.

Hon. Munkunda, speaking on behalf of the Mtwara Regional Commissioner, praised the Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA) for their effective management of port infrastructure projects, which have facilitated the docking of passenger ships like MV ACADIE.

She also expressed appreciation to the Mtwara Chamber of Commerce, Industry, and Agriculture (TCCIA) for their collaboration with an investor from the Comoros Islands, enabling the establishment of this ferry service. The new service is scheduled to operate bi-monthly voyages, providing a vital link between the Comoros Islands and Mtwara.

The launch of MV ACADIE signifies a significant step in enhancing transportation connectivity and facilitating the movement of passengers and goods between the Comoros Islands and Tanzania. This initiative is expected to further strengthen trade and cultural exchanges between the two regions while promoting regional integration and economic development.

The introduction of this passenger ferry service underscores ongoing efforts to improve maritime transportation infrastructure and promote regional cooperation in East Africa. MV ACADIE represents a promising avenue for promoting tourism, healthcare access, and economic activities, benefiting both local communities and international travelers.
