Pigeon Pea Farming Flourishes in Karatu District as Demand Surges

In a remarkable agricultural transformation, Karatu District in Arusha is experiencing a surge in pigeon pea farming, all thanks to a stable market and significantly improved prices. Over the past three years, the price of pigeon peas has soared from 800/- per kilogram to a lucrative range of 2,200/- to 2,400/- per kilogram, enticing more individuals to delve into farming in the region.

Mr. Joachim Gitagno, a local farmer who received training from the Rikolto organization, attested to the positive impact of this training. He emphasized how the program not only increased local consumption but also expanded the market for pigeon peas. Schools have played a pivotal role in driving up demand, incorporating pigeon peas into students’ diets following the organization's initiative to promote this crop as a viable alternative to beans. “The demand has skyrocketed after schools embraced pigeon peas as part of their pupils' diet due to the organization's intervention,” stated Mr. Gitagno, underlining the pivotal role of Rikolto in transforming perceptions about pigeon peas from purely cash crops to essential food items.

The one-day training program, conducted by Rikolto, focused on altering farmers' mindset regarding pigeon peas, positioning them not only as a cash crop but also as a staple food. "We were not consuming pigeon peas before, but after the training, we have incorporated this crop into our meals," affirmed Mr. Gitagno, echoing the sentiment of many farmers who benefited from the initiative.

Moreover, the training, which engaged 50 hotels, 100 primary schools, and 70 women food vendors, aimed to raise awareness about the health benefits associated with pigeon peas. Rikolto Extension Officer, Mr. Harold Lema, explained that the decision to conduct the training stemmed from the realization that many pigeon pea farmers across the country were primarily cultivating the crop for commercial purposes, neglecting its significance in local consumption.

Karatu District Nutrition Officer, Rosemary Daniel, highlighted the district's ongoing efforts in educating communities about the health advantages of pigeon peas. These initiatives have not only contributed to the local economy but also fostered a shift towards healthier dietary choices, marking a significant milestone in the region's agricultural landscape. As the demand for pigeon peas continues to rise, supported by a paradigm shift in local consumption habits, Karatu District stands as a testament to the positive impact of education, market stability, and community engagement in fostering sustainable agricultural practices and economic growth.
