Prime Minister's Directive Expedite construction of the Avocado Service Center

In a move set to invigorate the avocado industry in the Mbeya Region, Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa has issued a directive to fast-track the construction of an integrated avocado service center. This initiative, announced during the Prime Minister's visit to Kiwira in Rungwe District, aims to address the pressing issue of avocado wastage due to inadequate storage and processing facilities.

During his visit on Saturday, Prime Minister Majaliwa emphasized the importance of completing the construction procedures promptly. He underscored the need for the Ministry of Agriculture to provide comprehensive education to local farmers on modern avocado farming techniques to enhance both the quality and market value of their produce.

Enock Nyasebwa, the Director of Crops at the Ministry of Agriculture, provided an update on the project's progress, stating that the ministry is in the final stages of completing contractual procedures. Nyasebwa highlighted the pivotal role of the avocado service center, which will include state-of-the-art storage facilities and processing units capable of producing various avocado-based products, such as oil.

Furthermore, the government's commitment to ensuring high-quality avocado production is evident through its implementation of stringent criteria for avocado seedlings. By adhering to international standards, Tanzanian farmers aim to secure a competitive edge in the global avocado market, thereby boosting export revenues and contributing to economic growth.

In parallel developments, China's decision to conduct compliance auditing on Tanzanian avocado farms and packhouses signifies a significant breakthrough for local exporters. The selection of three sample plantations for inspection by the General Administration of Chinese Customs (GACC) paves the way for Tanzanian avocados to enter the lucrative Asian market.

The inspection process, overseen by the Ministry of Agriculture's Plant Health Compliance and Trade Facilitation Manager, Mr. Mdili Katemani, involves rigorous checks to ensure adherence to China's phytosanitary laws and regulations.

The signing of a protocol on sanitary and phytosanitary (PSP) requirements during President Samia Suluhu Hassan's state visit to Beijing underscores China's willingness to open its market to Tanzanian-grown avocados.

Dr. Jacqueline Mkindi, CEO of the Tanzania Horticultural Association (TAHA), hailed China's decision as a game-changer for local farmers, predicting significant economic benefits and expanded trade opportunities. The Prime Minister's directive, coupled with China's market access approval, sets the stage for a thriving avocado industry in the Mbeya Region and beyond.
