Singida's Sunflower Farmers Flourish with ASA's Subsidized Seeds

Sunflower farmers in the Singida Region have reason to rejoice as the Agricultural Seeds Agency (ASA) has commenced the distribution of at least 600 tonnes of subsidized sunflower seeds.

These improved seeds, a record variety, have been allocated to growers in the country’s sunflower hub region in accordance with government directives.

The primary goal of this initiative is to ensure that farmers in the region have access to high-yielding varieties at affordable prices, facilitating mass production of the edible oil raw crop.

During a tailor-made forum for the official launch of the seed distribution exercise, Dr. Sophia Kashenge, the Chief Executive Officer of ASA, addressed sunflower growers and stakeholders. She announced that the region would receive a total of 600 tonnes of subsidized seeds, including 315 tonnes of hybrid seeds.

"These seeds, known for their high-yielding potential, will be marketed to farmers at affordable prices to enhance production and productivity," stated Dr. Kashenge.

She emphasized the importance of seed dealers adhering to the set prices, as determined by the government through the Ministry of Agriculture. The subsidy aims to boost crop production and address shortages of edible oil nationwide.

Deputy Agriculture Minister David Silinde, speaking at the event, revealed the government's target to produce at least 5,000 tonnes of improved sunflower seeds. Currently, a total of 2045 tonnes have been produced through ASA and private sector institutions.

"The government is committed to addressing the existing shortage of edible oil in the country by ensuring farmers have access to sufficient improved seeds at affordable prices," emphasized Silinde.

Singida Regional Commissioner Peter Serukamba underscored the importance of farmers effectively utilizing the seeds to increase production. He commended the government for initiating the subsidized seed scheme, predicting significant improvements in the sub-sector's performance as a result.
