Tanzania approves $3.5 billion pipeline project

Tanzania has given its approval for the construction of a $3.5 billion East Africa Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) after last month Uganda issued a license to the project operator, the East African Crude Oil Pipeline company limited

The 1,443-kilometre (900-mile) pipeline will transport crude from vast oilfields being developed in Lake Albert in northwestern Uganda to a Tanzanian port on the Indian Ocean.

The 1,443-kilometre (900-mile) pipeline will transport crude from vast oilfields being developed in Lake Albert in northwestern Uganda to a Tanzanian port on the Indian Ocean.


The handover has been witnessed by the Minister of Energy, Hon. January Makamba. Other leaders who witnessed the event include the heads of the eight regions through which the pipeline will pass through, heads of institutions and members of various boards involved in the construction of the pipeline.


"This construction approval marks another step forward to EACOP as it allows commencement of the main construction activities in Tanzania, upon completion of the ongoing land access process," EACOP Tanzania general manager Wendy Brown said at a function to receive the approval certificate.


Director General of EWURA, Dr. James Andilile said at the event that according to the Petroleum Act, Chapter 392, EWURA has the responsibility to ensure, among other things, permits for the construction of infrastructure in the small oil sector in the downstream and middle streams, where EACOP's activities they fall.

In addition, the Minister of Energy, Hon. January Makamba, in his speech, has asked EWURA to announce the opportunities available in the project and to manage the law of indigenous service providers. The East African crude oil pipeline project is being implemented in the regions of Tanga, Manyara, Dodoma, Singida, Tabora, Shinyanga, Geita and Kagera.
