Tanzania's Flower Industry to be Revived

Hailemariam Desalegn, The Strategic advisor to President Samia Suluhu Hassan for the agriculture sector and the former Prime Minister of Ethiopia, has committed to supporting Tanzania's efforts to revive the multi-million-dollar flower industry in Arusha. This commitment comes as a beacon of hope for the local population, given the industry's historical contribution to the economy.

In its prime, the flower industry in Arusha was a significant economic driver, contributing 24.4 million US dollars annually in export value, providing over 4,000 jobs to locals, and contributing additional taxes and benefits to the rural economy.

During a recent visit to the dormant flower estates in Usa-river, Arumeru District, led by Arusha Region Commissioner Mr. John Mongella, Hailemariam Desalegn expressed his willingness to extend a helping hand to revamp the flower industry. As an influential figure in Ethiopia's successful horticultural industry, Desalegn offered his experience and networks to support Tanzania's initiatives.

"The horticultural industry in Ethiopia is a success story. I can use my experience and networks to help you revamp the non-operational flower farms," Desalegn assured the Arusha Regional Commissioner.

Desalegn, who served as Ethiopia's prime minister from 2012 to 2018, played a pivotal role in the success of Ethiopia's horticultural industry. The country implemented subsidies, generous credit schemes, duty exemptions on imported capital goods and raw materials, and a five-year tax holiday on profits.

Official data indicates that Ethiopia exported over 215,800 tonnes of horticultural products, generating more than 514 million US dollars in the final nine months of the fiscal year 2023. Flower exports alone accounted for nearly 444 million US dollars, while vegetables and fruits brought in 57 million US dollars and 13.3 million US dollars, respectively.

Arusha Region Commissioner Mr. John Mongella welcomed Desalegn's pledge, noting its significance for Tanzania's efforts to rejuvenate the flower industry and its positive impact on the local economy.

"We're so delighted to see the influential former prime minister of Ethiopia's willing heart to support our mission to revive the defunct flower farms and restore the local population's hope," said Mr. Mongela.

Highlighting the economic impact of the flower industry's previous success, Mr. Mongella recalled that the once-thriving flower plantations generated millions in revenue, created thousands of direct and indirect jobs, contributed significantly to government taxes, and stimulated the rural economy.

The Chief Development Manager of the Tanzania Horticultural Association (TAHA), Mr. Anthony Chamanga, expressed eagerness to see the revitalization of these farms, anticipating positive outcomes for local businesses, job creation, and economic revenues.
