Tanzania Showcases Digital Innovation at United Nations' Virtual Worlds Day

During the United Nations' first Virtual Worlds Day event, Tanzania's Minister highlighted the nation's impressive strides in digital innovation and transformation. Addressing the event virtually, he emphasized Tanzania's proactive approach in embracing virtual worlds and digital technologies, spearheading a range of innovative initiatives to harness technology for positive change and development.

The event aimed to demonstrate the transformative power of virtual technologies in driving global innovation, connectivity, and sustainable development. Tanzania's contributions were a focal point, showcasing investments in educational technology, smart city development, agricultural innovation, cybersecurity measures, and mobile banking solutions.

One of the standout initiatives discussed was Tanzania's groundbreaking mobile banking solutions, which have significantly promoted financial inclusion. These initiatives have empowered individuals in remote and underserved communities to access banking services, conduct secure transactions, and participate in the formal financial system, thereby fostering economic empowerment and inclusion.

The Minister also reaffirmed the government's commitment to data protection and privacy rights, underscoring efforts to create a regulatory environment that upholds ethical standards and user rights. "By creating a regulatory environment that supports ethical standards and user rights, Tanzania is establishing itself as a beacon of digital excellence in Africa," he said.

Highlighting the intersection of technology and tourism, the Minister detailed Tanzania's innovative approach to transforming the tourism industry through virtual reality and digital platforms. By offering immersive virtual tours of the country's majestic attractions, Tanzania aims to attract international travelers and celebrate its rich cultural heritage, natural wonders, and historical sites in a unique and engaging way. These digital initiatives are seen as a means to create deeper connections with global audiences and promote the country's tourism offerings.

“These efforts are not only transforming the way services are delivered but also empowering citizens and communities with access to information, resources, and opportunities in the digital age,” he noted.

According to the Minister, Tanzania's embrace of digital transformations is driving sustainable development, economic growth, and social progress. The country's strategic use of technology is fostering an environment where innovation can thrive, benefitting all sectors of society.

Dr. Abdullah Saleh Possi, Tanzania's Permanent Representative to the UN in Geneva, who also represents the country at the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), emphasized the importance of Tanzania's involvement in global policy discussions on virtual technology. "Considering the young population of Tanzania, there is a need to make effective use of technology in order to create and open more jobs for our young population," Dr. Possi said.

As Tanzania continues to invest in digital innovation, the nation is setting a benchmark for other countries in Africa and beyond, demonstrating how technology can be leveraged to achieve sustainable development and inclusive growth.
