Tanzania Urges Investors to Invest in the Railway Industry for Economic Growth

In a bid to accelerate development across various sectors, investors have been encouraged to channel their resources into the railway industry, a call echoed by Deputy Minister of Transport, David Kihenzile, during the launch of the Rail Business and Investment forum organized by the Tanzania Railway Corporation (TRC).

Highlighting the potential impact of investing in the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR), Kihenzile emphasized that such investments could significantly boost the construction of factories in regions like Mwanza, Kigoma, and Tabora. He asserted that a robust rail transport system could contribute to doubling income and foster overall economic growth.

The Deputy Minister expressed optimism that the investment forum would attract strong investors, facilitating significant contributions to the railway sector. Kihenzile urged stakeholders to leverage the opportunities within the railway industry for mutual benefit.

TRC Director General, Masanja Kadogosa, used the two-day forum to elucidate the diverse investment opportunities available within the railway sector. Kadogosa outlined the ongoing railway improvements from Dar-es-Salaam to Tabora and Tabora to Isaka, emphasizing the positive impact of modernizing rail infrastructure on the development of adjacent sectors, particularly the construction of factories along railway routes.

Currently boasting over 2000 kilometers of railway, Tanzania aims to expand its railway network by an additional 4700 kilometers. Kadogosa revealed that the government has already invested more than 23 trillion Tanzanian shillings to enhance railway transportation.

In a call to action, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Transport, Prof Godius Kahyrara, urged the public to safeguard railway infrastructure, stressing the importance of reporting vandalism. Recognizing the considerable expenses involved in improving railway lines, Kahyrara emphasized the need for collective efforts to protect critical infrastructure.

Mwanza Regional Commissioner, Amos Makalla, commended President Samia Suluhu for her support in the construction of the Standard Gauge Railway. He invited investors to explore opportunities in the Mwanza region, citing its favorable business environment for sustainable growth. The Rail Business and Investment forum signifies a strategic step towards leveraging the railway industry to spur economic development across Tanzania.
