TPA urges Bandari College-Dar es Salaam to Spearhead Blue Economy Research

Dar es Salaam, Tanzania - In a significant development, Mr. Ernest Mangu, the Chairperson of the Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA) Board of Directors, has called upon Bandari College-Dar es Salaam to conduct in-depth research on the blue economy. Mr. Mangu, a retired Inspector General of Police, made this announcement during the 22nd Graduation Ceremony at the Bandari College-Dar es Salaam on Friday.

Highlighting the vast potential of the blue economy, Mr. Mangu urged the college to identify all stakeholders, their needs, and opportunities within the sector. He emphasized the importance of research-based information to enhance TPA's efficiency, especially as the country seeks to capitalize on the blue economy.

Mr. Mangu acknowledged the government's commitment to providing necessary resources for learning at the college, ensuring that students and the maritime community acquire the essential skills for the sector's prosperity. He commended the college for consistently building capacity among TPA workers through both short and long courses, enabling them to contribute professionally and profitably.

Moreover, Mr. Mangu praised the college for adapting its curriculum to identify emerging opportunities in maritime areas, such as oil and gas, aligning students' skills with global market demands.

Dr. Lufunyo Hussein, the Rector of Bandari Dar es Salaam College, reported that this year's graduation saw a total of 717 graduates, with 383 males and 334 females. Additionally, he revealed that the college provided short courses to 1485 stakeholders from government entities and the private sector from January to October.

To establish the college as a maritime research hub, Dr. Hussein announced the formulation of a research and development unit. This unit will play a crucial role in exploring markets and the entire value chain of ports and the blue economy.

In a noteworthy move, Mr. Plasduce Mbossa, TPA's Director General, awarded internship opportunities to 20 outstanding students. The internship program, spanning one year, aims to equip students with practical skills in various ports across the country, including the Dar es Salaam Port.

Expressing gratitude for the internship opportunity, Mr. Jackson Mwaipaja, one of the graduates, pledged to excel in the program and contribute significantly to future opportunities.

Bandari Dar es Salaam College offers a diverse range of certificate and diploma programs, including Ordinary Diploma in Maritime Transport and Logistics, Ordinary Diploma in Shipping and Port Management, and Basic Certificate in Freight Clearing Forwarding and Shipping Management.
