TRA reports a 6.1 percent tax collection increase

The Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) has announced that it collected 97.9 percent of its target for the third quarter of the financial year 2022/2023, thanks to improved awareness among taxpayers and strengthened collection systems.

In total, TRA collected 5.9 trillion Tanzanian Shillings out of the set target of 6 trillion Tanzanian shillings for the January to March 2023 period. This represents a 6.1 percent increase from the amount collected in the same period the previous year.

TRA Commissioner General Alphayo Kidata attributed the success to the timely resolution of issues, a conducive environment for business, increased willingness among the public to pay taxes and improved relations between the authority and taxpayers.

He also commended taxpayers for their continued support of the Government's initiatives in raising collections for national development. Kidata urged Tanzanians to continue supporting President Samia Suluhu Hassan's efforts in adhering to voluntary tax payment, submitting tax returns on time, paying withholding tax on time, and using Electronic Fiscal Devices (EFD) machines in all transactions as required by the law.

He expressed optimism that the achievements made during the third quarter would serve as a catalyst to further increase collections in the remaining period of the current fiscal year, during which TRA has been tasked with collecting 23.65 trillion Tanzanian Shillings to partly finance the estimated 41.4 trillion Tanzanian Shillings expenditure for the government budget.
