US Vice President Kamala Harris visits Tanzania to explore investment opportunities (LIVE)

US Vice President Kamala Harris has embarked on a three-day official visit to Tanzania, with expectations high for an improvement in bilateral ties between the two nations.

During her stay, Harris is scheduled to hold talks with President Samia Suluhu Hassan and is also expected to engage with Tanzania’s Startup Association and meet with youth and emerging entrepreneurs to explore opportunities for capital investment, policy and regulatory improvement, and knowledge transfer.

The visit comes almost a year after President Hassan's visit to the US, where she met with Harris and other leaders, resulting in various US companies pledging almost $1 billion in investments to Tanzania. Harris's visit is expected to enhance trade, tourism, education, health, agriculture, environment, information and communication technology, security, and defense ties between the two countries.

However, the US still lags behind China in terms of bilateral trade with Tanzania, with a total value of $1.53 billion between Tanzania and the US, compared to $11.13 billion between Tanzania and China over the past five years, as reported by the Bank of Tanzania.

Nonetheless, Harris's visit is anticipated to bolster new trade and investment projects between the US and Tanzania.
