Zanzibar President Lays Foundation Stone for State-of-the-Art Market, Emphasizes Empowerment for Women and Youth

President Dr. Hussein Mwinyi of Zanzibar reaffirmed the pivotal role of modern markets in fostering opportunities for women and young entrepreneurs, enabling them to establish businesses and access financial support, thereby contributing to the overall development of the nation. The President made these remarks during the foundation stone-laying ceremony for a cutting-edge market in the Mwanakwerekwe area of Unguja West B District on Saturday.

The event was a significant part of the festivities marking the 60th anniversary of the 1964 Zanzibar Revolution in the Isles, drawing attention to the government's commitment to modernizing market infrastructure.

President Mwinyi, amid cheers from a diverse crowd comprising petty traders, local importers, producers, and residents, expressed confidence that the dream of having modern markets in Zanzibar would soon materialize. He addressed skeptics who had doubted the feasibility of constructing a market in a swampy area, directing the Regional Administration office to invite them for the grand opening upon completion.

The President highlighted that the Mwanakwerekwe market would be unparalleled in the country, urging the local community, especially petty traders, to maximize the benefits of the new structure scheduled to be operational by March this year.

Accompanying President Mwinyi, the Minister for Regional Administration, Local Government, and Special Department, Mr. Masoud Ali Mohammed, extended gratitude to the contractor, JKU (Jeshi la Kujenga Uchumi), for the swift progress in constructing the market. He also commended the Zanzibar Building Authority (ZBA) for their valuable consultations.

Principal Secretary (PS) of the Ministry, Mr. Issa Mahfoudh Haji, provided insights into the Mwanakwerekwe new market, revealing that the 35.5 billion TZS project, spanning 33,984 square meters, will accommodate approximately 5000 members of the business community once completed. He further highlighted ongoing projects in larger spaces, including markets in Jumbi, Chuini, and Mombassa.

District Commissioner (DC) for Unguja West B District, Ms. Hamida Mussa, expressed optimism that the completion of these new markets would eliminate the sight of petty traders conducting businesses along roadsides and other unauthorized places. The developments underscore Zanzibar's commitment to creating a conducive and modern business environment for its citizens.
